History
The Greenwood Flight Centre, formally known as the Greenwood Flying Club, has been operating since 1958, and teaching people how to fly for over 45 years. When the “Flying Club” first started it was a non-profit organization composed of serving R.C.A.F. personnel that already had their private licence and interested in flying only for recreation and pleasure. Later in 1959, flight training started for both military personnel and local civilians from all areas of the valley who were interested in getting a civilian pilot’s licence. During the following years, a small group of cadets were taught each summer which helped keep the club running during the slower winter months.
Due to Joint Stock requirements, the Greenwood Flying Club name was changed to Greenwood Flight Centre in 2000 and the social group of aviation enthusiasts referred to as the “Flying Club” left the pilot training to our qualified staff.
GFC has trained hundreds of pilots for private licences, and over the years a large number of them continued training for night ratings, instrument ratings, multi engine ratings, and commercial licences. Many today are professional pilots active throughout the aviation industry. The range of professions that have come through our doors vary as much as the weather. We have trained mechanics and machinists, doctors and nurses, teachers and high school students, air cadets as well as flight navigators, and aircraft technicians just to mention a few. Today we still offer training for a Private Pilot Licence as well as Recreational Pilot Permit, Commercial Licence, Multi Rating, Night Rating, Instrument Rating, VFR OTT Rating and Instructor Rating. We also offer a two (2) year Professional Pilot Diploma Program, geared towards students looking for a career in aviation, who are able to work towards their goal full time.
In April of 2005, after 46 years of flight training at the Greenwood Military Base, GFC took its last flight from the Greenwood runways. To say the least, it was an emotional time for all.
GFC is now located at the Kings County Municipal Airport (often referred to as the Waterville Airport or CCW3). We have set up a dispatch office, simulator, and briefing room in the Main Terminal Building. Our own facilities house our main classroom, offices, lounge and kitchen.
Our main goal as a flight training unit is to provide the best training environment we can with knowledgeable staff to assist you. Our staff will give you the experience necessary to become a competent and safe pilot while having all the training tailored to your schedule.
Since relocating to the Waterville Airport, the parent company of the Greenwood Flight Centre has received its Transport Canada Air Operating Certificates for Air Taxi and Aerial Work. We also operate an Approved Maintenance Organization offering aircraft inspection and repair.
As a matter of interest to some, we still have Daily Flight Logs dating back to the 1960’s as well as many photos and other memorabilia from that era.
