Instrument Rating (IFR) Single Engine
The holder of a licence endorsed with an instrument rating may exercise the privilege to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR).
- Prerequisites: Valid Private Pilots Licence.
- Knowledge: A stundent must achieve a 70% on an Instrument Rating (INRAT) multiple-choice written examination which shall include the following:
- Canadian Aviation Regulation
- Instrument Flight Rules and Procedures
- Meteorology
- Instruments
- Radio and Radar Systems
- Navigation
- Experience: An applicant shall have completed a minimum of:
- 50 hours of cross country flight as pilot-in-command (10 hours must be in the appropriate category).
- 40 hours of instrument time of which a maximum of 20 hours may be instrument ground time. The 40 hours instrument time shall include a minimum of:
- 5 hours dual from the holder of a flight instructor rating
- 5 hours in aeroplane where the applicant is applying for a group 1, 2 or 3 instrument rating
- 15 hours dual from a qualified person
- 1 dual cross country flight under simulated or actual instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) of a minimum of 100 nautical miles and include at 2 different loactions an instrument approach to minima.
Ground School is not required, but is recommended to obtain a better understanding of instrument procedures.
