International Students
Students are drawn to the Greenwood Flight Centre for our mix of theoretical and practical flying experiences. Operating out of the Kings County Municipal Airport, the Greenwood Flight Centre is an ideal location for flight training. It offers the convenience of a small town airport with the benefit of several large international airports only a short flight away. Students become proficient flying in small, uncontrolled airports, as well as gain experience dealing with military and heavy airline congestion nearby.
Canada is a world leader in flight training. As a leading member of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan over 167,000 aircrew were trained in Canada from 1940 to 1945. From 1950 to 1958 Canada trained military pilots from many NATO member countries and currently operates the NATO Flying Training Program for NATO member countries.
The importance of foreign commercial pilot training in Canada is underscored by the fact that in 2009, of 1267 commercial pilot licenses issued by Transport Canada, fully 481, or 38%, were issued to foreign students. Of the commercial licenses issued to foreign students 240, or 50%, were issued to students from India.
Canada is also home to CAE, the largest Full Flight Simulator company in the world and a world leader in flight training. Canada is also home to Bombardier, the manufacturer of the CRJ line of regional passenger jets and the Q Series of turbo prop aircraft that include the highly successful Dash 8.

SECTION 5: Additional Information
Canada is the second largest geographic country in the world and has a total population of about 33 million. Nova Scotia is located on the Eastern Coast of Canada in what are known as the Atlantic Provinces. The Atlantic Provinces are known for their scenic beauty and their warm, welcoming people.
The climate in Canada depends on the region you are visiting and the season of the year. In Nova Scotia the summers are warm (15 to 30 degrees C) and the winters are cold (-20 to +10 C). This variance in weather provides students with the opportunity to experience flying in all different types of weather conditions, such as rain, snow, wind, sun, very warm and very cold.
The cost of living in Nova Scotia is relatively cheap compared to the rest of Canada. Depending on the type of accommodations desired, this cost can range from $400 - $800 per month. Food and other living expenses are also variable depending on the living style of each person, however on average student’s food and other living expenses range from $250 - $600 per month. Students attending flight training at the Greenwood Flight Centre will be responsible for obtaining their own living accommodations. Greenwood Flight Centre will assist students whenever possible in obtaining these accommodations.
The community surrounding the Greenwood Flight Centre has all the amenities that a student could need. But it does not have the problems associated with larger population centers. Students can be comfortable in the knowledge that they have the full support of the community.
Students living in Nova Scotia should also be prepared to incur transportation expenses. Those students living near the airport property can walk to school. Students living further away from the airport can make use of the Kings County Transit System which stops just at the airport. In addition to the Transit System, students may be interested in acquiring a rental car from one of the local car rental companies.
Students should also note that the Government of Canada does not pay for the medical costs of foreign students. Health coverage for foreign students varies from province to province. Students must ensure they have Private Health Benefits in place prior to arriving in Canada. The cost of this Health Coverage averages around $40 per month.
