Professional Pilot Program (PPP) – Commercial Instructor

Requirements information has been taken from CAR’s 421. The requirements listed below are based on current rates and the minimum required hours. The actual number of hours will vary for each student.

Requirements:

  • Admission: Application
  • Age: Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Education: Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Medical Fitness & Validity: Category 1 Medical Certificate.
  • Private Knowledge: Minimum of 40 hours ground school on the following subjects:
    1. Canadian Air Regulations
    2. Aerodynamics and Theory of Flight
    3. Meteorology
    4. Airframes, Engines and Systems
    5. Flight Instruments
    6. Radio and Electronic Theory
    7. Navigation
    8. Flight Operations
    9. licensing Requirements
    10. Human Factors and Pilot Decision Making
    11. A student must also pass a TC written exam and obtain a minimum of 60% in each of the areas of (1) Air Law; (2) Navigation; (3) Meteorology; and (4) Aeronautics.
  • Commercial Knowledge: Minimum of 40 hours ground school on the following subjects:

  • Instructor Knowledge: An applicant shall have completed a minimum of 25 hours of Ground School and obtained at least 70% on the Written Exam Flight Instructor Class IV Rating - Aeroplane.
  • Skill: Within 12 months preceding the date of application, a student must successfully complete a flight test as outlined in the Flight Test Standard – Private Pilot Licence, Commercial Pilot Licence, Instructor Rating.
  • Private Experience: Minimum of 45 hours of flight training including a minimum of:
    • 17 hours of dual instruction including a minimum of:
      • 3 hours of dual cross coutry
      • 5 hours of dual instrument
    • 12 hours of solo including:
      • 5 hours of solo cross country including:
        • 150 nautical miles
        • 2 full stop landing
  • Commercial Experience: Minimum of 200 hours of flight time, of which 100 hours shall be pilot-in-command. An applicant shall have completed 65 hours flight training consisting of a minimum of:

    • 35 hours dual, including:
      • 5 hours night, including a minimum of 2 hours cross country
      • 5 hours cross country, which may include the 2 hours from above
      • 20 hours of instrument flight time
    • 30 hours solo, including:
      • 25 hours emphasizing the improvement of general flying skills, including: 300 nautical mile cross country flight which shall include a minimum of 3 landings at points other than that of departure.
      • 5 hours night with a minimum of 10 takeoffs, circuits and landings.
  • Instructor Experience: Before commencing flight training, an applicant shall hold a Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot Licence and have completed 20 hours of Instrument time 10 of which must be Instrument Flight time. Before commencing ground training, an applicant shall have successfully completed the Written Exam and Flight Test for the Commercial Pilot Licence. The flight training shall include a minimum of:

    • 30 hours Dual Flight Training, including 5 hours Instrument Instruction.

Reimbursement Policy:

If a student is unable to finish the program, any unused monies remaining on account will be returned to the individual, except for the following expenses:

  1. Registration Fee ($100)
  2. Ground School Fees (after classes have commenced)
  3. Administration Fees ($50) for each major phase once commenced
  4. Cost of Ground School Kit

Several additional courses have been built into the program at no additional cost to the student who completes the Professional Pilot Program. However, the students will be made aware that these courses do cost the company money and any student not completing the program will be levied the appropriate charge for the course(s) given.

Please Note:

The hours noted above are based upon the minimum time required by Transport Canada. If a student requires additional training, applicable fees will be applied at applicable rates.

Failure to meet the standard for Transport Canada written exams will require an additional fee paid directly by the student to Transport Canada.

Failure to meet the standard for Transport Canada flight tests will require an additional fee paid directly by the student to Transport Canada.
